Our tanning workshop is perfect for enthusiastic beginners and those who have some existing experience. Learn a comprehensive set of tanning skills with our experienced, qualified and friendly instructors.

Going through the process of tanning a large animal skin is lengthy and can take many hours to complete. Because we all have busy lives these days, it can be hard to make the time to learn this skill – which is why we’re offering our exclusive one-day course.
With our one-day tanning workshop, you will learn the theory as well as the practical side behind the big stuff. And we will be practicing these skills on a smaller scale, by using fish and small game.
Fish and small game skins have been utilized for centuries for every day use. These days, you can even find them being used to make things like wallets, boots, clothing, and hats.

Let’s take a look at what the day involves.
First, you will arrive at our beautiful woodland location. Here, you will be met by our instructing team that will then take you over to the wild game preparation area. This is where you will receive a small safety talk accompanied by refreshments.
Our instructors will spend approximately two hours teaching and demonstrating the tanning process. This will include talking about deerskin hair on, as well as showing some examples of end products that can be made from materials like this.

Once the demonstration is over, it’s your turn to try. You’ll be given one whole fish and one whole squirrel. Removing the skin from the animal is the first step, a crucial part of the tanning process.
You will then continue the tanning process under our guidance until you’ve completed it.

With a lot of hard work under your belt, you’ll be able to leave us with a gained knowledge of this traditional skill. You will also go home with two beautiful processed skins to do what you like with.

1. How to correctly remove the skin of fish and squirrels
2. Descaling and Fleshing fish and squirrels
3. Create tanning solutions
4. Drying, Racking and tacking

5. How to stitch if this is necessary
6. Making use of all the leftovers
